Challenge #1 - Playing Cards...OR Playing Games

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."

Randy Bausch

Let's have fun, playing cards ...

or playing games!

PART 1: Your challenge this week is to take 4 interesting photos of playing cards or games. You can interpret this challenge as you wish. Your photos could be still-life, they could show movement, they could be portraits ... I'll give you the theme and you let your creative flag fly!

Try to use different angles to take the shot, choose your favourite combination among the cards or highlight one card and blur out the rest, throw the cards, hold the cards, hide behind the cards ...! There are countless ideas and I am sure you all have some cards up your sleeve (see what I did there).

You could also choose to photograph a favourite game ... checkers, chess, scrabble, family games night all make for great subjects.

PART 2: Using The Elements of Art (linked here), The Principles of Design (linked here) and the Rules of Photography (linked here), critique your photos in a few sentences and tell me about your process. We have been critiquing photos since September and you all have become pros but remember, when critiquing your photos, you are not "criticizing", but rather explaining what you did to make the photo more interesting to the viewer. (See example below.) I am also creating a link to the Composition Venn Diagram you have been using (here).

As always, the photos will be put in a google photos album titled: (Your Name) Challenge #1, and shared with mrsthindson@gmail.com

The critiques should be handed in using the comment section connected to each picture in the album.

Due to the LONG weekend, I will be accepting submissions until Friday April 17th.

Example:

THE KING, a photo by Mrs. Hindson

In this photo of a chess game I used EMPHASIS to draw the viewers eye to the white chess piece (The King). I did this by blurring out both the background and foreground of the photo, leaving the subject to stand out. This is a BALANCED photo which I felt added interest and stability to the photo.  Lastly, by following the LINES of the chessboard (LEADING LINES), I am able to control where the viewers eyes naturally go because our eyes are usually drawn though a photo along lines.

I can't wait to do these challenges with you. Enjoy the theme and good luck!
